With the end of the year fast approaching, the Parents’ Association will be providing an opportunity for families to contribute to group gifts for the teachers, assistants and support staff. This service is provided in order to give teachers, assistants, and staff the opportunity to combine the generous gifts that they receive from families.
The money collected for each person is used to purchase a Cadillac Fairview Mall Shopping Card for them. The shopping card allows the recipient to make purchases at any of the stores in the Cadillac Fairview malls, including Sherway Gardens and the Eaton Centre, to name a few. Some staff members have expressed interest in receiving a direct transfer instead of a gift card, and we are pleased to offer that option to them upon request.
Participation is totally voluntary. Please do not feel pressured to contribute.
Some parents have asked for ballpark suggestions for contributions, in past years parents have contributed around $20-$25 for the teacher and around $15-$20 for an assistant, and from $5-$20 for support staff whom they and their children regularly connect with. It is entirely up to you if you would like to participate and completely your call as to how much, if anything, you would like to contribute. Contribution amounts will be kept confidential.
How to Contribute
For the first time, we are offering two ways to contribute – in person, as before, and online. Complete details are below.
In-person at Humberside
From Tuesday, June 5th to Friday, June 8th, there will be envelopes for each class, as well as other subject teachers and office, after school care, and support staff available for you to sign and to which you may contribute. During the peak hours (7:30-9:15 am and 3:00-5:00pm) we will have the envelopes in the back area of the lobby where we have hosted the coffee hours, to avoid congestion in the office. We will have the envelopes laid out to allow you to easily find the classes/names that you are looking for. We will take away the envelopes on Friday, June 8th at 9:00am. At that time, we will collect the cards, total each collection and head off to the mall to get the gift cards.
To participate, please sign each of the cards (leaving room for other families to sign as well) and leave your contribution in the envelope with the card (exact change, cash only please). Please note that the money is tallied and emptied daily to minimize the cash left in the office. Please do not make change from the envelopes – try to bring exact change. We will endeavour to leave a float with the volunteers for each shift so that change can be made. The number of envelopes for the collections can be a little daunting, please don’t feel obliged to contribute beyond those you were planning to acknowledge. For a personal touch, you can encourage your child to create a picture or card for those who they want to acknowledge in a special way.
We now offer an online giving option. All donors who contribute online will be acknowledged by having their name included in the greeting card when the gift card is presented to the teachers and staff. If you wish to add a personal note to accompany your online contribution, we encourage you to do so in the form of a card given directly to the teacher. Please do not leave a personal message on the website, as these cannot be easily distributed.
Please note that our online payment processor (PayPal) charges us a fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, and this amount will be deducted from your contribution. (e.g. $0.88 for $20 total purchase, $1.75 for $50 total purchase $3.20 for $100 total purchase, etc.)
Online Contribution Instructions
To contribute online, click on the name of the staff member. This will take you to a PayPal shopping cart where you may add the “quantity” of $1 contributions you want to make (i.e. 15 x $1 = $15 contribution). When you have set the quantity to the desired amount, simply click on “Continue Shopping” to go back to this page and select another staff member.
When you have finished adding your contributions, proceed to check out through the usual PayPal checkout process. Note that you do not need to have a PayPal account to check out with PayPal – you can use a credit card.
